Written as part of my "Music About Nothing" project, this album tells the tragic story of Albert II, a rhesus monkey who in 1949 became the first monkey in space.
Hello, friends, this is Albert the Astronaut
They're countin' down, rocket engines are gettin' hot
When the time is right, they'll blast me into the atmosphere
Man, I'm dressed so nice
But I don't know what's goin' on in here
Listen, friends, to the things I want you to hear
The transmission's weak, hope my voice is still comin' in clear
The time is right for me to meet my destiny
Don't worry for my life
This is the way it has to be
They said I'll be the first monkey in space
It's such an honor to be in this place
I'd like to thank the president, the cabinet, my monkey friends
I'll never see you again
Now, my friends, the time for the liftoff is drawing near
I want to thank you for all you did to get me here
My human friends, they swear I am a pioneer
But I don't understand why they don't put themselves in here
They want me to be the first monkey in space
It's such an honor to be in this place
I'd like to thank the president, the cabinet, my monkey friends
I'll never see you again
The folks at NASA know just as well as me
This voyage could be suicide
This stolen glory is a small step for man
When it really is a giant leap for monkey kind
Here we go now, traveling at the speed of the a stampede in the jungle
I never got to live in the jungle
Lived my whole life pushed down by a man
By the man, by what I am
Look at me now, flying higher than the trees, the canopy
I never lived in a tree, but in a cage in a rage, always made to behave
I'm dismayed, but today this is all gonna change
Getting higher, can't see where I am, I've left all my friends
I'm all alone, I don't know what's gonna happen to me
But for the first time I'm up high, I'm alright, I'm out of sight
Once in a while I start to think that they're using me
But how could that be, I gotta turn off my brain, my disdain
I'm insane to think the world will someday know my name
I can't go back
That's the signal, we have made it past the line
Though I'm the first one, I feel I've done this all the time
I hear voices, asking questions I don't know
And the answers, buried deep inside my soul
What's with all the stares from people who aren't there?
Is it space that does these things to me?
Or is it making history?
Why am I the one who's in this chair?
Why does the whole world seem to care?
Who's my mother?
Did she know that I'd become so important?
But I'm just like the other ones
Who's my father?
Is he out or just like me?
Did he know that I won't be an Albert III?
I'm running out of time, so I've got to clear my mind
Is it space that does these things to me?
Or is it making history?
Why am I the one who fills this chair?
Why does the whole world seem to care?
The answers to my questions are still a mystery
I don't know why, but now that's not important to me
Forget all my complaining, I miss that place called home
I didn't realize that 'til I was all alone
They were bringing me down, but now they're bringing me down
My life isn't over, and soon I'll touch the ground
I underestimated the men at ground control
I thought once I was here I was on my own
They're taking me back down now, and I am so surprised
I've got a second chance to live my life
I thought they'd let me go, but now they're letting me go home
I can still grow older, there's a new status quo
They're bringing me back, they're bringing me back, baby
They're bringing me back, they're bringing me back, baby
They're bringing me, bringing me back
So my friends, it's not the end, forget what you heard
You better prepare your monkey selves, I'm making my return
Hey now friends, this is Albert the Astronaut
I'm coming down a little faster than I had thought
The ground below is growing larger in my view
I'm sure it will slow down once they deploy my parachute
You know I am the first monkey in space
No other monkey has been in that place
Just wait until I get back on the ground
I'll tell you about how I feel now
Why haven't I slowed down?
Well my friends, I just fell out of the sky
Listen close, think I'm running out of time
I guess it's right, after all it's my destiny
I guess this is goodbye, but please don't you mourn for me
'Cause I was the first monkey in space
And now I'm going to some other place
I'd like to thank the president, the cabinet, my monkey friends
I'll never see you again
